HELP !… I recently adopted a two and a half month old Dalmatian pup (male). I’m not new to dogs but this is my first Dalmatian. My others dogs seem to respond well to training, but this one barely listens to me. The only time he does is when I have food or treats.
Since he is still young, I don’t want to mess up training. I want to do it right from the start. Right now I have two other dogs (1 Golden Retriever and one Jack Russell Terrier, both adopted as well) and 3 cats. Everyone seems to get along fine and we let them roam the house freely, no cages or crates.
Some of the problems that we’re having with the Dalmatian are:
1. He pees everywhere, but poops only outside.
2. Plays too aggressively with out other dogs.
3. We’re always worried when we have to leave them alone (because of the number 2 problem)
Any help will be appreciated, thanks!
It’s not uncommon for puppies to play rough at that age. Usually they grow out of it on their own. If they don’t, such as in your case… Then you will have to teach them to play nice.
As for peeing everywhere, it could be because he doesn’t get to go outside often enough? While they are young you need to walk to OFTEN! It could also be the urine smell of the house. If you don’t properly clean it your dogs will be able to smell it even if you don’t. Our sense of smell is nothing in comparison to theirs. There is an article on house training here. Could be helpful.
Best of luck to you and your new Dal 🙂
I’ve been using a special formula specifically made for cleaning up these kind of messes, so there shouldn’t be any smell for him to pick up on. I’ll be sure to read that article. thanks
