For Dalmatians, exercising is not only fun and exciting but it also comes with a lot of benefits for their health. Dogs that sit home all day and don’t get enough time to spend outdoors to run around and play tend to live unhappier and unhealthier lives.
Exercising is not only beneficial for the Dalmatians physical body, but it also helps calm and relax their minds. An hour or two a day will help relieve some of the tension and stress that might be caused out of boredom and loneliness. And trust me – having a dog that is relaxed and calm is a lot easier than having a dog around that feels agitated, stressed, and nervous.
How Much Exercise Do Dalmatians Need?
Each dog is different and will need different levels of physical activity per day. However for the most part, the dog will let you know when he or she is too exhausted. Never force the dog to exercise against their will, it will only cause them more stress. Start off with 15-30 minutes of running with your dog per day and build on it until you find the ideal amount.
Exercising a young Dalmatian puppy – Since puppies are still growing, it’s actually not a good idea to over-exercise them. Their energy usually comes in short bursts. So playing several short games throughout the day is the ideal way to exercise a Dalmatian Puppy.
Exercising 6-12 month old Dalmatian – Around this age you can start taking him out for longer walks. No need to run or jog, just a regular walk around the block couple times a day will do. If you own a fenced yard, let them out to run around there for a good part of the day. It’s also helpful to take the dog out more often if you’re in the process of house training them.
Exercising an adult Dalmatian – An adult Dalmatian will rarely say “No” to a chance to flex their legs. These dogs were bred over the years for their stamina so the urge to run is deeply hardwired into their brains. So don’t be scared to take the dog out for your morning run with you. If anything, he will probably push you to run faster and for longer.
Tips and Ideas for Exercising
Tired of using the same training ideas with your puppy and want to try something new? Or maybe you just need a couple of new ideas to start exercising with your puppy. Here are some things that you can try:
Take your Dalmatian jogging with you – If you go out for the morning runs already, why not take your puppy with you. He will enjoy the time he gets to spend with his owner.
Teach your Dalmatian fetch – Fetch is a pretty fun game for any dog and it’s perfect for the owner that doesn’t want to or is too tired to constantly run with his or her dog. All you have to do is stand there and throw the ball and the dog will do the rest on his own.
Let him play with other dogs – If your dog can behave around other dogs, take him to the park and let him play with some other dogs. The most common game dogs like to play is chase, and that requires quite a bit of stamina and energy.
Take him out on more walks – Even if you’re not running on the walk with the Dalmatian, a simple walk is still some exercise. So if you have an extra 15 minutes and don’t have anything to do why don’t you take the dog out for a walk?
